  1. "How Do I Matter as a Heritage Building?" Exploring Heritage Building Agency in the Technology Era

    2026

    B. G. Tan, Y. Kocaman, C. Beşevli, O. Özcan · ACM Designing Interactive Systems Conference

    Abstract

Heritage buildings are increasingly adapted to contemporary needs through technological interventions, yet these approaches often remain human-centred, leaving limited recognition of the buildings' own capacity to shape architectural change. Drawing on critical heritage and more-than-human perspectives, this pictorial investigates how heritage buildings can be approached as agentic actors in negotiations of spatial and technological adaptation. Through thing-interviews with ten architects and a design fiction session with four experts, the study proposes implications around consent and power asymmetries, stewardship through care and companionship, and authenticity beyond originality.

    Abstract

This article develops and evaluates a scale for assessing design thinking mindset and abilities among multidisciplinary undergraduate students. It uses design education research to examine how learners understand, practise, and evidence design thinking across course contexts, offering a measurement tool for teaching, facilitation, and interdisciplinary design education.

  3. Speculating on the Role of Media Architecture in Post-Disaster Rebuilding and Recovery

    2025

    B. G. Tan, O. Özcan · Media Architecture Biennale Conference

    Abstract

In post-disaster contexts, design is not only about rebuilding structures but also about reimagining how architecture can become a communicative medium that supports recovery, resilience, and collective memory. Following the Kahramanmaraş earthquake on February 6, 2023, this study conducted two focus groups with architects and interaction designers in the case of Antakya, Turkey. The analysis identifies future media architecture as a facilitator of social connection, an enabler of multispecies participation and collective efforts, and a mediator of heritage preservation and revival.

  4. Exploring Residents' Expectations and Designers' Perspectives Towards Post-Earthquake Permanent Housing

    2024

    B. G. Tan, O. Özcan · International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction

    Abstract

Post-disaster permanent housing is the backbone of recovery efforts after destructive events. Following the Kahramanmaraş earthquake on February 6, 2023, this research explores the expectations of affected residents in the historic district of Antakya and discusses these expectations with multidisciplinary designers. The findings reveal implications for designing togetherness, valuing community efforts and traditional work, including productional activities, and preserving and reminiscing heritage values in future post-earthquake homes.

  5. Living in a Historic Neighborhood in the Technology-Era

    2022

    B. G. Tan, O. Özcan · Nordic Human-Computer Interaction Conference

    Abstract

Our use of everyday spaces continually transforms with the domestic technologies entering our homes. However, accommodating these technologies is especially challenging in historic neighbourhoods as these spaces were built in eras suitable for different lifestyles. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews with early-adopter residents in two historic neighbourhoods, the study identifies expectations toward future domestic spaces and proposes design directions for location-specific multisensory experiences, flexible and adaptable spaces, and human-like interactions with domestic environments.

  6. Carrier Bag Narratives for More-than-Human Care

    Abstract

Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and its surrounding areas, such as Human-Building Interaction (HBI), and Media Architecture have long been shaped by narratives of progress, innovation, and problem-solving, often following the “heroic arc” of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth. While productive, these narratives tend to marginalize practices of maintenance, repair, and care, as well as the more-than-human relations through which sociotechnical systems persist. This full-day workshop invites participants to explore alternative narrative forms for HCI through Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, narratives centered on gathering, sustaining, and caring rather than heroic achievement. Through short provocations, peer annotation, and collaborative exercises, participants will bring existing research projects, probes, or artifacts and collectively surface and rethink the narratives embedded within them. The workshop will generate speculative narrative artifacts such as storyboards, diagrams, or care-oriented reframings. By foregrounding narrative and care, the workshop aims to expand how interactivity is understood at DIS, contributing to relational and care-centered approaches beyond interaction in HCI.
